The story of Jane, a girl who grows up in the hill country of Kentucky and struggles for two things: adulthood and an education. Pulling herself up from an environment of illiteracy and privation, through pioneer-like hardships, she realizes her aspirations and fulfillment in becoming country teacher herself. A humorous, inspiring, and poignant story set amid evocative descriptions of Kentucky life. Written from the author's memories of early childhood with her classmates, and their days growing up in a country log schoolhouse.
Martha Jane (Griffis) Marler (1880-1971) was born in Wayne County, Kentucky, and began teaching in 1900. After marrying she relocated to Hunt, Texas. In the 1930's she returned to school and attended the Southeastern State Teachers College (now Southeastern Oklahoma State University) and East Texas State College. She retired to Hobbs, New Mexico.
