After volunteering at KPFA in the late 1950s, he went on to found several community radio stations across the country, beginning with KRAB (Seattle, 1962) and KBOO (Portland, 1968). The essays, written between 1963 and 1969, touch on KRAB-FM, life in the Pacific Northwest, literature, culture and politics.
