Richardson's novel concerns a young American, brought up and living in Paris, who inherits a southern mansion (located in a Mississippi village). That Late Unpleasantness refers to the Civil War, a fact still fresh in the minds of the local inhabitants. Our protagonist, having been in Europe, learns adapt to southern customs.
Norval Richardson (1877-1940) was a novelist, writer, and diplomat. A native of Mississippi who called Vicksburg home, he also served in the American embassies in Rome, Lisbon, and Tokyo between 1916 and 1924.
