Douglas McKay served as the US Secretary of the Interior between Jan 1953 and April 1956, and had formerly been the Governor of Oregon. Inscribed by Gilbert H. Grosvenor, the author of the introduction and an early working and hiking companion of Mather's. In 1899, he had been hired as National Geographic's first full-time employee by Alexander Graham Bell and later served as the magazine's president, 1920 to 1954.
