The first of Norton's three ''Lorens Van Norreys'' Dutch espionage novels set in and just after World War II. The story, told in part through a series of letters, was inspired by and intended to promote goodwill and understanding around the world through letter-writing, which at the time had been disrupted by the war, specifically with those in Axis and Axis-occupied countries. Beginning in Nazi-occupied Holland, in June 1940, this adventure novel's action spans the continents, from Europe to Java and Australis to the United States, wherein young Lorens and his network seek to recover a priceless family heirloom amidst the hardships of wartime, evading Germans, struggling with the Japanese, and working in tandem with an American friend.
