The third book of verse by Valentine Brown (1862-1926), author, lawyer, and son of Portland pioneers. In 1923, An item in the Oregon Journal newspaper announcing the governor of Oregon's proclamation of Author's Week, mentions Brown in the same breath as Ben Hur Lampman and Elizabeth Lambert Wood.
The author notes that the title poem and ''The Spirits' Concert'' were written in 1890, ''The Reveille'' in 1899, and the remainder were written in 1903.
