The inscription reads, ''For Ruth Manary / on her birthday and mine / 12 September 1955 / from her friend / Alfred a Knopf''. Ruth had been at the cocktail party given to honor Knopf at author Stewart Holbrook's Portland home in August 1951. [A scan of a newspaper photo of them together is laid in.] Ruth Manary (1896-1988) was a Portland socialite and the wife of lumber executive Gordon Manary.
