Anthology of Urdu poetry, covering the period circa 1690 to 1905. The jacket claims that this is the first anthology of Urdu poetry to appear in English. The Pakistani author and critic, Ahmed Ali (1910-1994) provides the nineteen-page introduction and biographical and contextual introductions for each of the authors. These poems were translated throughout the 1940s, many having appeared in various journals in Pakistan, India and U.K.
The poets represented are: Mohammed Vali [Wali Muhammad Wali, 1667-1707], Mirza Rafi Sauda [1713-1781], Khwaja Mir Dard [1720-1785], Mohammad Taqi Mir [Mir Taqi Mir, 1723-1810], Insha Allah Khan Insha [c. 1752-1817], Bahadur Shah Zafar [1775-1862], Khwaja Haidar Ali Atash [Aatish, 1764 -1846], Sheikh Ibrahim Zoq [Mohammad Ibrahim Zauq, 1790-1854], Asadullah Khan Ghalib [Ghalib, 1797-1869], Momin Khan Momin [1800-1852], and Nawah Mirza Khan Dagh [Daagh Dehlvi, 1831-1905].
