Originally published in 1931 with the title America Hispana, South of Us presents an examination of the history, with cultural and political dimensions, and present situation in the countries of Central and South America. He interrelates their past history with their present attitudes, dissects the psychology, tells why Americans are disliked in certain parts, predicts what the future will hold for these countries, and discusses prospects for international integration. His examination covers the three layers of their civilizations: the Indian, the Spanish-Portuguese-Catholic, and the contemporary capitalist imperialism.
Concludes with a Frank's ''personal bibliography,'' listing outstanding national authors recognized in each country, and an index. Waldo Frank (1889-1967) was an American novelist, historian, activist, and critic, who wrote extensively for The New Yorker and The New Republic. He was called ''a literary ambassador to Latin America'' and was highly regarded by his readers throughout Latin America.
