Till Eulenspiegel is by far the most famous and the best loved of German folk-heroes, a wandering rascal who clowns his way through half of medieval Europe. The original texts are hugely boisterous, punning, satirical, scatological tales that, as a whole, give the reader an immediate sense of the vitality and variety of the life of the waning Middle Ages.
This edition presents the first translation into English of the oldest and most important edition of the tales known: that written in the Strassburg dialect of Middle High German by the anonymous ''N.'' and published in 1515 by Johannes Grieninger. This has been translated by Paul Oppenheimer and includes his Introduction and Critical Appendix.
