A detailed account describing the people, customs, society, way of life, and geography of the region of Jammu and Kashmir, northern India, based on the author's observations during his time there throughout the 1860s and early 1870s. Frederick Drew (1836-1891), was an English geologist and Fellow of both the Royal Geographical Society and the Geological Society. He worked as a geologist for over a decade in Maharaja Ranbir Singh's government and also served as the Governor of Ladakh.
From the collection of John Wilson (c. 1826-1900), an Irish-born pioneer merchant and book collector of Portland, Oregon. His collection was considered to be one of the finest on the west coast and was bequeathed to the Portland public library in 1900.
