A novel set in Greece during the mid 1800s in which a German botanist is kidnapped by a notorious band of thieves active in and around Athens, whose chief is nicknamed ''The King of the Mountains.'' Written by the French author Edmond About (1828-1885) and first published in 1857. In 1964, it was adapted into the French film, Le Roi des montagnes, directed by Willy Rozier.
