A sympathetically written children's story about the life a buffalo named Bumpy out on the western plains during the times when the massive thundering herds were subject to large scale hunts.

Nell Smidell Nesbitt (d. 1995), a teacher and writer for children's magazines, was also the author of Cobi Camel (1944, Caxton Printers). The illustrator, Calista Dowling (1881-1968), was a well known artist in Oregon. A book illustrator, muralist, and commercial artist, she was also considered one of the leading watercolorists in the Northwest.
