Description: Bound volume of 21 issues of The Child's Own Magazine. Boards in brown cloth. Wear to head of spine and corners. Gilt stamped title on spine barely visible. 1879 gift inscription on ffep; some very minor soiling to a few pages, else internally clean. Color frontispiece for both January issues. Wonderfully illustrated throughout. [252] pages. 7 x 5.5 inches. Placed in an archival mylar sleeve.

This magazine, published by the Sunday School Union in London, featured stories, both amusing and instructive, for the moral and social edification of children. Several of the stories illustrate compassionate and sympathetic treatment of animals, along with many tales demonstrating admirable and useful behavior, bits of English history and sentiments of tradition, and encouragements to piety, all presented in short prose pieces and verse. Quite entertaining.

1875 - 12 issues complete (pp. 1-144). 1876 - 9 issues (Jan to Oct, but lacking the Aug issue, pp. 1-84, 97-120).
