1926 vintage scouting manual by the future military historian and author, Virgil Ney (1905-1979).

By 1926, the year in which Ney published The Duffel Bag and also joined the Army, he had already been the scoutmaster of Troop 47 in Omaha, Nebraska (the troop drew its membership from Miller Park School). Prior to that, he had been involved in the Creighton University ROTC (1922) and attended the Citizens Military Training Camp in Des Moines (summer 1923). Throughout 1928 he served as a Boy Scouts field executive at Mineola, Long Island. In 1933, shortly after it was established, Captain Ney became a commander in the Civilian Conservation Corps. During World War II, he served as a battalion commander in the Philippines and after the war stayed to serve as a historian with Gen. Douglas McArthur's staff. In 1947, he was sent to Nanking too establish a school for combat historians for the Nationalist army of Chiang Kai-shek. He served in the Korean War and then became a planning specialist with the Civil Defense office in Washington, served as assistant director in the Army War College program at George Washington University, and was with the Special Warfare school at Fort Belvoir.
