Item: [cabinet card] 4 cabinet cards from Canyon City, Oregon - photography by G. I. Hazeltine
Description: Four cabinet cards from Canyon City (Grant County), Oregon, from the photography studio of G. I. Hazeltine. No other identifying information. A couple of the cards show creasing and one has a small spot of soiling. Three of the cards have topically irrelevant notes on their reverse made by previous owner.
From the studio of the Eastern Oregon photographer and pioneer, George Irving Hazeltine (1836-1918), brother of the distinguished western photographer, Martin Mason Hazeltine. The brothers operated a photography studio in San Francisco 1853-1855 prior to George taking up an interest in mining. In 1860 he settled in Canyon City and lived there continuously until his death. As one of Eastern Oregon's most prominent citizens, aside from his photography business, he also served as Grant County recorder for a quarter century, county judge for eight years, and county treasurer for one term. He was also notable for having established the first pack train service between Canyon City and The Dalles and for building Eastern Oregon's first flouring mill at present day John Day.
From the collection of Norman David Moore, author of The Butch Cassidy and Gang Old West Photographic Finds of the Century.
