An extensive record of the history and lives of the Hooker and Shelley families of Grant County, New Mexico, and related families. The volume generally covers the period up through the 1950s. Includes lots of family stories, descriptions of life in Grant County and ranching along the Gila River, biographies, and has quite a few historic family photos, transcribed letters, and miscellany. This is a thoughtfully compiled collection of materials on these early settlers of Grant County, many residing in Silver City and in the towns of Gila and Cliff.
The fist Hooker to arrive in New Mexico was Seth Worthington Hooker (1824-1885), the son of George Hooker and Minerva Taylor, who were from Hinsdale, Cheshire County, New Hampshire. Seth married Amelia Jane Shackleford.
The first members of the Shelley family (from Clinton County, Kentucky) to move to New Mexico were Peter McKindree Shelley (1852-1935), his wife Emily Jane York, and his siblings.
