A family history, presented by Elbert McNeal Bates (1870-1950), providing detailed narratives about the lives of his grandparents, parents, and his own family. Early members of the family moved from Ohio to Kansas in the later 1880s and had a variety of residences in southern Kansas, including at Erie, Wellington, West Plains (now Plains), LeRoy, and Coffeyville. Around 1914, Elbert and family relocated to Troy and Kalispell, Montana, then to Saskatchewan, and in the early-1930s to Spokane, Washington. He concludes with providing genealogical information on the Gard, Camp and Thompson branches of the family.
Includes a four-page description of the Blizzard of 1886 by the author's mother, Augusta (Camp) Bates Hornaday, and the last 42 pages are given to the author's arguments against the use of tobacco and alcohol.
