Grafstrom follows the system as was practiced by the Royal Gymnastic Central Institute, Stockholm, with some modifications, and presents Mechano-Therapy ''in a condensed form, and in a rational and popular way, in order to make it easily understood by the student'' (from the Preface).

Dr. Axel Victor Grafstrom (1858-1925) was born in Sweden, immigrated to the United States in 1883, and maintained a successful medical practice in Queens and, after about 1898, in Jamestown, New York.
