An novel of the old West, a tale within a tale, telling of adventures stretching from Mexico to the port of San Francisco, and on to a mystery and the hunt for buried Aztec treasure in Kansas. It also has a curious aspect, in that it includes a periodically appearing thread of speculation about reincarnation.
The obscure author, John Dunloe Carteret, at the time of publication, was identified by the Pratt County Times (Pratt, Kansas) as John D. Carter of Isabel [Barber County], Kansas. In another newspaper in 1888, he was identified as being a resident of another nearby town, Sawyer, in neighboring Platt County. In 1890, he was writing poetry for The Kansas City Times (Missouri) and was recognized as a charter member of the Kansas City Scribblers' Club. In 1902, there were several references to him in the Major County Chieftain (Fairview, Oklahoma), which associated him with Woods County, Oklahoma.
