He left the firm in 1907 to work as a representative for the New York City publishing house of Brentano's. He was a native of Boston and a graduate of the Boston Latin School. Following graduation, he briefly lived in Denison, Iowa (1884-1885), where he worked as a teacher at the Center school in Milford Township, and learned something of the printing trade at the Denison Review, before returning to Boston.
