$100.00

Title: Grant High School [Portland, Oregon] Yearbook June 1934 Memoirs [Beverly Cleary]

Description: Light wear to covers. Finger soiling in the bottom margin of a two pages, else interior is clean and unmarked. [64] pages. 11 x 7.75 inches.

Senior class includes the children's author, Beverly Cleary (1916-2021, maiden name Beverly Bunn). Along with her senior portrait, it appears that she is also in the Migwan literary club group photo (bottom row, third from left). Her best friend, Claudine Klum, is also in the graduating class. Klum is mentioned in both of Cleary's autobiographies and was the basis for the character Austine Allen, who appears in the novels Ellen Tebbits (1951) and Otis Spofford (1953).

In addition, the graduating class includes Ormond Binford, son of the Portland publisher Maurice Binford. In 1946, Ormond was made an assistant manager of the publishing firm Binfords & Mort; he also served as general manager of their affiliate firm, the Metropolitan Printing Company.

The yearbook features portraits of the graduating class of June 1934 (also noting their school activities, sometimes indicating which school they transfered from, and which college they expect to attend) and about thirty group photos for various student clubs (without student identification).
