The Household Book of Poetry was first published in 1857; this is the revised and enlarged edition on 1882. The compiler and editor, Charles Anderson Dana (1819-1897), was a notable American journalist, newspaper editor, author, and senior government official. During the American Civil War, he served in President Lincoln's cabinet as Assistant Secretary of War.
