Transcribed letters covering the period 1856-1882, most being written during the Civil War years of 1861-1863 while the brothers were serving with the 78th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The opening war letter, written by Job, describes the Battle of Shiloh (Apr 6-7, 1862). The material collected here includes bibliographical references and was compiled by Kaye Noce, the great-great granddaughter of Washington Spencer Sowers.

Includes about ten letters written in the decade preceding the Civil War. The war letters were composed at Pittsburgh Landing (Shiloh) TN; Black River Bridge (Pea Ridge?); Corinth MS; Bolivar TN; Columbus KY; Water Valley MS; Davis' Mills MS; Lafayette TN; Memphis TN; Lake Providence LA; ''Vistas Plantation''; Milliken's Bend LA; Rock Springs [Rocky Springs?] MS; Midway Hospital at Boll's [?] Plantation MS; near Vicksburg MS, and Camp Chase OH. The remaining dozen-or-so post-discharge/post-war letters include correspondence to and from the brothers and some other miscellaneous family letters.

The brothers, Washington Spencer Sowers (1836-1915) and Job[e] Patterson Sowers (1840/41-?), grew up in Brush Creek Township in Muskingum County, Ohio; the family had previously resided at Brownsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Their father was Daniel Sowers (1804-1853).
