In this story of skilled navigation, seamanship and great adventure, Dumas describes his great, single-man voyage in 1942-43 on the ketch Lehg II, sailing around the world through the roaring forties, which he justly describes as 'The impossible route.' The 272-day voyage began in Buenos Aires, and headed east, with only three landfalls: Cape Town, Wellington, and Valparaiso. During the voyage, he became the first lone navigator to round the Horn and survive, the first to round the Horn from West to East, the first to sail by the 'impossible' Roaring Forties route, and the first to make it with only three landfalls.

Vito Dumas (1900-1965) was a prominent Argentine solo sailor and adventurer, known for his remarkable achievements in long-distance single-handed sailing.
