The author, Charles Warren Brewster (1802-1868), was a lifelong resident of the city and was the senior editor and publisher of the Portsmouth Journal. He had been with the newspaper for fifty years and, shortly before his death, published an autobiography, ''Fifty Years in a Printing-Office.'' Rambles About Portsmouth was first published in 1859.
