Description: First English Edition. Bound by James Macdonald of New York, half brown morocco with marbled paper boards. Spine in six compartments, the second and third lettered direct, the others with gilt tooled flowers and ornamental borders. Top edge gilt. Lightly worn at spine ends and corners. Area around foot of spine darkened (one inch). Marbled endpapers. Stamp-signed by binder on verso of ffep (J. Macdonald - binder N.Y.). Bookseller catalog ticket affixed to verso of ffep (showing a revised price of $3.00), along with some penciled notations; minor smudges on half-title, else interior is very clean. Two chapter-head vignettes. Small 8vo. pp. vii, 312.

The first of Hans Christian Andersen's five travel books, originally published in 1831 in Copenhagen, in which he describes his travels in Germany in that same year. The volume concludes with a sixty-page biographical sketch of the Danish sculptor Albert Thorvaldsen.
