The Third Infantry was organized on November 22, 1899, immediately after the Spanish-American War, while the Philippine Insurrection was still in progress, and was largely formed of ex-soldiers who had seen active service in that campaign and of members of the old First Regiment. More than twenty-five percent of these officers had seen actual service during the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection or the Boxer Rebellion. With the advent of the First World War, the Third Infantry was reorganized in October 1917 into the 162nd Infantry Regiment, 41st Division, United States Army National Guard.
