This is the first of the three Living Dead Man books by Elsa Barker (1869-1954), which she composed through a process of automatic writing in London and Paris 1912-1913, channeling her recently deceased friend and spiritual advisor, David Patterson Hatch. Prior to the First World War, Barker had studied with Carl Jung in Europe and, in London, as a member of Samuel L. MacGregor Mather's Golden Dawn-associated occult order Alpha et Omega, acted as liaison between its American and British branches. She was also a notable editor, poet and short story writer. Her papers hare held at Brown University.

The man she channeled, David Patterson Hatch (1846-1912), claimed to be in touch with a secret lodge of ''Christian Hermetics'' and had written several books, including ''Some Philosophy of the Hermetics'' and ''Scientific Occultism.
