This is the catalog of a private collection of Indian artifacts made over the course of twenty-five years by John William Painter(1929-2008). It is a high quality publication with heavy glossy paper and color illustrations of about 300 artifacts. This is the signed Author's Proof of a limited edition of one-thousand copies, privately printed by the author.

The nineteen-page introduction is followed by a separate listing for each object in the collection, organized by artifact type.

The bulk of the collection is from the Plains, but early Northeastern objects are well represented and few pieces from other areas are also included. The Southwest and Northwest Coast are represented only by some pottery and a few baskets. The real strength of this collection is in the large number (thirty-seven by the author's count) of very rare, pre-1850 artifacts that it contains. Many of the descriptions of artifacts include references to other comparable items in museums and in the literature.
