One of the oldest classes of Buddhist literature, the Jakata Tales (or Birth Stories), mainly concern the previous births of Gautama Buddha in both human and animal form.
This new and revised edition (1925) was edited by the author's wife, Caroline Augusta Foley Rhys Davids (1857-1942), who was, like her husband, a notable Pali scholar and translator. Thomas William Rhys Davids (1843-1922) was an English scholar of the Pali language and founder of the Pali Text Society (Caroline was its president 1925-1943). He also took an active part in founding the British Academy and the London School for Oriental Studies. The original edition was issued in 1880.
