Color frontispiece with tissue guard, and 56 illustrations. Includes index to both volumes. x + 306 pages.

Sophus Tromholt's account of his travels and observations in Lapland during 1882-1883, as a participant in the International Polar Research Explorations, with the purpose to study the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis. Tromholt provides extensive descriptions of the customs, manners and personal characteristics of the Sami and Kven peoples, while narrating his travels and scientific research, including his work at the stations at Koutokeino and Bossekop, Norway, and Sodankyla, Finland. As an amateur photographer, he also captured numerous images of the people and places of the region, many of which are included in the volume.
