Title: Bible with wood covers made from the pulpit of the 1767 Longrow Relief Kirk, Campbeltown, Scotland
Description: A small New Testament Bible with covers made from the wood of the pulpit of the Relief Kirk in Campbeltown (i.e. the Old Longrow Kirk), which was built in 1767 and demolished in 1871. The wood covers are illustrated, showing a view of the old Relief Kirk on the front cover along with an Auld Lang Syne verse and the text ''Made from the pulpit of the Old Long Row Kirk, Campbeltown. Opened 1767''. The rear cover shows a view of the church which supplanted it, the Longrow United Presbyterian Kirk, which opened in 1872. A unique and nicely preserved piece of Campbeltown history.
The Bible is encased in a heavy, wood-lined metal box, with blue velvet cushions. The Bible's itself is somewhat worn and in fragile condition. The leather spine has a vertical crack down its spine and is chipped at the head. All edges gilt. Lacking front free endaper. Front cover is partially detached. Printed by G.E. Eyre and W. Spottiswoode of London. Diamond 48mo.
The Scottish Presbyterian denomination, known as the Relief Church (or Presbytery of Relief), was founded in 1761. In 1847, it united with the United Secession Church to form the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland.
