An extensive scrapbook-style history of four early hotels in the Bellingham area: The Byron (1889-1912), The Leopold (1912-1996), The Henry (1923-1946, plus as the Exchange Building 1904-1922), and The Bellingham (1926-1997). The volume begins with the construction of The Byron House on Dock Street, Sehome, in the spring of 1889. The material included is wide-ranging, from reproductions of menus, advertising and correspondence, to newspaper articles, interior and exterior photos, accounts of memorable events, notes on architecture and city block development, accounts of the architects, proprietors, employees, guests, all arranged as a sequential scrapbook that presents the history and culture of these hotels through the changing decades and from a variety of angles.
The author, Elta Rosamonde Ellis Van Miert (b. 1926), is a local historian and the author of several books on Whatcom County and the Bellingham area, including The Fairhaven Hotel Journal 1889-1956 and Settlers, Structures & Ships on Bellingham Bay 1852-1889.
