Eight lectures by Richard St John Tyrwhitt (1827-1895), the English cleric and academic, known for his writings on art, who in 1857 had assisted William Morris in painting the roof of the Oxford Union Society. The preface was written by John Ruskin (1819-1900), a friend of Tyrwhitt's and the then Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford.
