Title: [Scrapbook] Memory Book - young woman's scrapbook from Virginia Intermont College 1919-1920
Description: A young woman's lovingly created scrapbook of her time at Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Virginia 1919-1920. The album is replete with original photographs and ephemera. Nearly all of the leaves have been filled in and are meticulously captioned. Items include snapshots and pictures of school buildings (including an aerial taken from an airplane), many inscriptions made by friends, scraps of cloth and ribbons, various pieces of both school and personal ephemera, music programs, dried leaves, candy wrappers, tipped-in personal letters, numerous calling cards (many annotated with home city or address), a handwritten list on nearly 150 girls at the school, a report card, a couple form letters signed by the school president H. G. Noffsinger, Pullman train ticket and luggage tag, a wrapped stick of Beech-Nut gum, a few locks of girls' hair, and even a cigarette.
This gorgeous and well-preserved scrapbook belonged to Gertrude Denslow Kice (1902-1996). Her handwritten closing note indicates that she had to leave the Virginia Intermont due to illness, along with a clipped newspaper notice that states the same. She then notes that she attended the Kentucky Home School for Girls in her hometown of Louisville. Most of the items appear to date from fall-winter of 1919, and the concluding items from the spring of 1920 are from the Kentucky Home School.
Gertrude was born in Peewee Valley, Kentucky and at the time of her attendance at Virginia Intermont was living in Louisville. She appears to have relocated to Los Angeles by 1923, where she lived with her parents on Wilshire Blvd and was attending the University of Southern California. In 1927, she married the attorney James H. Van Law. Following his death she married the attorney William Wallace Cottle. The Los Angeles Examiner article on their 1932 marriage mentions that she was a graduate of both the Westridge School for Girls (a prestigious preparatory school in Pasadena) and the University of Southern California. They lived in San Marino, Los Angeles County for several decades.
