The author, Egbert Samuel Oliver (1902-1989), was born in Yankton, Columbia County. He taught English at Willamette University 1929-1950 and Portland State University from 1950-1973. He was the author of The Tarbells of Yankton and The Shaping of a Family. He was also a nationally known Melville scholar; his papers are held in the archives at Duke University.
