One of the best and largest books ever written about magic. Upon the death of the author in 1935, who had finished about half of Greater Magic, a lot of manuscript remained to be completed. Carl Waring Jones, who had contracted for its publication, hired Jean Hugard in 1938 to complete and enlarge the text to over 1,000 pages. Jean Hugard (1871-1959), one of the world's great stage magicians, immigrated to the United States from Australia in 1915. He founded Hugard's Magic Monthly in 1943 and was also named the fourth ever Society of American Magicians, Dean of Magicians in 1951.
The previous owner, W. T. Noel Preston (1904-1970), was a member of the Society of Magicians, Hartford, Connecticut.
