The previous owner was John Lonzo Woody (1872-1942), a Latah County Sheriff and County Commissioner, whose portrait appears on page 65. A printed notice for the 1943 public auction of his widow's estate is affixed to the rear pastedown: ''Public Sale | Having sold my farm, I will sell at public auction, 6 miles west of Kendrick and 4 miles north of Juliaetta, on American ridge, on gravel road, on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1943 [list of farm machinery, livestock, and household goods] Lunch Served By American Ridge Red Cross Unit | Mrs. J. L. Wood, Owner''. The atlas appears to have been inherited by John's son, Ralph Oscar Woody, of Pomeroy, Washington (both their names appear on the front free endpaper).
