A relatively short volume, describing the life, work, and spiritual beliefs of the revivalist preacher, professor of systematic theology, and early president of Oberlin College, Rev. Charles G. Finney (1792-1875). Not entirely, but largely culled from other sources, as indicated in the preface: ''The contents of this little book have been partly gleaned from Mr. Finney's Memoirs, partly from his ''Systematic Theology,'' and partly from a personal recollection of the Prince of Preachers.''

The author, Henrietta Matson (1839-1905), was the sister of Henry Matson, who had been the librarian of Oberlin College from 1874-1877, and who had also been the person to whom Finney had dictated his Memoirs. Henrietta, a native of Ohio, spent nine years in Oberlin as a student and graduated with the class of '62. She gave her life to Christian work, including ten years as a missionary in Africa, India and England. She taught in the London Missionary School for five years and later was a Bible teacher for the Pentecostal Mission in Nashville and was on the faculty of the Nashville black liberal arts school, Fisk University (her handwritten manuscript ''The History of Fisk University'' is held in the Special Collections at Fisk). Near the end of her life she relocated to Birmingham, Alabama.
