Title: The Brown-Schutt Genealogy and Allied Families
Author: Compiled by Maude Levering Lawrence and Geraldine Lawrence Hurd
Description: Hardcover in dark brown pebbled cloth with gold title on spine. A few handwritten annotations, else clean. Two illustrations: frontispiece portrait of Helen Brown Beardsley and photo of her husband's home in Elkhart, Indiana. Name index. 120 pages. Rare. Four institutional copies located on OCLC.
The first 13 pages give concise ancestral genealogies of Helen Maude (Brown) Beardsley (b. 1873, Kendallville, Indiana - d. 1958, Beverly Hills California). Her father's family is traced back to Thomas Brown (d. 1688) and his wife Bridget of Sudbury, Massachusetts, who later moved to Cambridge. Her mother's family is traced back to William Jansen Schutt, a Dutch immigrant who died in 1722 at Schawangunk, New York, and his wife Griete Jacobs.
The final 90-or-so pages give genealogies for 44 allied New England families, many of whom immigrated to America in the 1630s, including the familes of Baker, Baldwin, Bates, Blott, Bruce, Clapp, Clark, Coburn, Colburn, Cutler, Fairbanks, Ford, Freer, French, Gibbs, Hayward, Hinsdale, Hollister, Hosmer, Hoyt, Lancton, Lawrence, Lilley, Miller, Nims, Phelps, Plum, Prescott, Randall, Richards, Sheldon, Shepard, Smead, Smith, Strong, Treat, Warfield, Warner, Watkins, Weld, Winship, Woodford, Woodruff, and Woods.
The work was compiled by Maude Levering Lawrence (1880-1964), a professional genealogist in St. Paul, Minnesota, and her daughter Geraldine Lawrence Hurd.
