Title: History of the Captivity of Napoleon at St. Helena [Four volumes, complete]
Author: General Count Montholon
Description: Four volumes in a fine binding. Half binding in tawny umber polished calf with marbled sides. Raised bands with two gilt-lettered, brown leather spine labels and gilt ornaments in the remaining compartments. Top and bottom compartments scuffed; moderate edgewear. All edges dyed red. Marbled endpapers. Each flyleaf signed ''E. P. Christy / Ny may 1850''. Sprig from the willow tree that shaded Napoleon's grave at St. Helena laid in first volume (with an explanatory penciled note on frontispiece tissue guard). Volumes II & IV lacking frontispieces.
A scarce set of the four volumes. Written by Napoleon's general and companion in exile, the marquis of Montholon (1783-1853), who also served as the ex-emperor's testamentary executor.
Appears to have belonged to Edwin Pearce Christy (1815-1862), the conspicuously wealthy American composer, singer, actor, and stage producer who founded the blackface minstrel troupe, Christy's Minstrels.
