A history of the mission at Waiilatpu, Marcus and Narcissa Whitman, Henry H. Spalding, their work with the Cayuse Indians, and the Whitman massacre and its aftermath.

The author, having been at Walla Walla on November 29, 1897, on the 50th anniversary of the massacre, had heard many conflicting statements which conflicted with historical statements that had been made about the massacre and related events. Over the intervening years he gathered detailed information and in 1915, met three of the survivors and heard their firsthand testimony. In this history, he sets out to separate fact from fiction.

The author, Miles W. Cannon (1862-1938), was a prominent citizen and business man in North Yakima and Boise. He was one of the wealthiest men in Yakima County and established and was president of the Yakima Valley Bank, organized the Emporium (the largest department store in central Washington), and was manager of the St. Paul and Tacoma Lumber Company's lumber yards in eastern Washington. He also held various government positions, including several years as receiver and register of the United States land office in Yakima. In 1909 he moved to the Boise area and was in the fruit business while also serving as an Idaho state Highway Commissioner and was later the state commissioner of agriculture, connected with the Department of the Interior during the Coolidge administration.
