One of the earliest biographies of George Washington, first published in 1800. The author, Thomas Condie (1772?-1814), was a Philadelphia bookseller and bookbinder, whose business was located at No. 20 Carter's Alley. In 1798 he published The Philadelphia Monthly Magazine (possibly also colloquially referred to as Condie's Magazine), which only lasted during that year and, very notably, is reported to have featured the first extended biographical sketch of Washington.
The printer, Richard Folwell, whom Condie appears to have occasionally partnered with, was located nearby at No. 33 Carter's Alley. The alley was located between Chestnut and Walnut streets, near Second Street.
