King Island Christmas is about a village’s struggle to overcome a winter storm and bring a priest ashore to celebrate the holiday. The story is based on the experiences of Rogers’ longtime friend, Juneau artist Rie Munoz, who lived on King Island in the Bering Sea in 1952. It was later adapted into a musical.
Jean Rogers (1919-2013) was a longtime resident of Juneau and an author of children's books, of which King Island Christmas is the best known. Rie Munoz (1921-2015), another longtime resident of Juneau and one of Alaska's most beloved artists, has had her work featured in over 400 galleries across the United States and Canada. The story stems from the time when both she and her husband had taken teaching posts on King Island in the early 1950s.
