Description: A study of courage, how it is born and maintained in the modern soldier, the soldier's engagement with fear and its care and management, and how courage is spent in war. Lord Moran draws on his won experiences in the First World War. He had served with the Royal Army Medical Corps and was medical officer to the 1st Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers from 1914 to 1917 and medical officer in charge of the medical facilities at the British 7th Stationary Hospital in Boulogne from 1917 to 1918. He won the Military Cross in 1916 for services during the Battle of the Somme.

Charles McMoran Wilson, 1st Baron Moran (1882-1977), became Winston Churchill's private physician in May 1940. In 1966, he published The Struggle for Survival, a revealing and controversial book about Churchill.
