The material in the first part of the volume, ''Parlor Amusements'' (94 pages), has the page headline that reads ''hocus pocus''. It appears to have been first published in Philadelphia in 1889. The second part, ''Tricks and Diversions with Cards: A Popular Explanation of All the Deceptive Tricks ever Performed'' (64 pages), had also been previously published, though its publication history is hazy.
