A dead man's widow believes her husband was murdered. No one else except Conan Flagg, owner of the local bookstore, believes her because her husband liked to walk but never went near the ocean - where his dead body was discovered. Conan, also a private sleuth, soon notices a tie-up between some odd bookstore customers, their mysterious liking for certain books, a fleet of Russian trawlers hanging out near the harbor, and the antics of a very curious cat called Meg. When a trap to catch the enemy doesn't work, Conan's search for a solution to the mystery turns into a fight for his own survival.
