The first essay is somewhat unusual for an Episcopalian author in that it discusses, in detail, the various elements and descriptions of man's psychic constitution, even comparing the relative terminology used by Theosophists, Hindus and Egyptians for the seven elements (or souls) of the human being.
John Coulson Skottowe (1867-1940), at the time of the publication of this volume, was the rector at St. Katherine's Episcopal Church in Pensacola, Florida. He later, and for many years, served a parish in Hawkinsville, Georgia before retiring to the Seattle area around 1935. He was also a F & AM, Scottish Rite, and Royal Arch Mason.
