The author, Sister John Gabriel Ryan (1874-1951), influenced the development of nursing education nationally [see Biographical Dictionary of Modern American Educators]. She was an influential administrator for the Sisters of Providence in the Northwest who worked to improve the standardization, nursing accreditation, and management training for the Providence system of hospitals. In 1917 she was appointed the general supervisor of training schools in the west, in 1924 she was named the directress of schools of nursing, and in 1933 she became the hospital consultant for the western provinces.
